- Pakistaniat: Samad Khurram: Harvard Student Refuses Award from U.S. Ambassador to Pakistan
→
What he is saying is what so many Pakistanis have been saying. That the U.S. will not be respected if its actions defy its own words. It will certainly not be respected if it continues to kill innocent Pakistanis through its indiscriminate drones. Maybe its time that the U.S. begins to listen to the Pakistani people rather than to a few “leaders” who have become so very adept at telling the U.S. exactly what it wants to hear. #

- Manufacturing dissent by Cyril Almeida

Cy writes: WANT political paralysis? Then try a game of ‘will-he-or-won’t-he’. First, pick your option: sack the president; replace the army chief; amend the constitution; impeach the president; restore the judges; break the coalition; dissolve parliament; declare martial law; or spill state secrets. Then pair your choice with one of these men: Asif, Nawaz, Musharraf, Kayani, A.Q. Khan. Confused? Not sure who wants what? Don’t worry — that’s the paralysis part. #

- An unwanted year - by Ardeshir Cowasjee

Sunday’s must read column is usually Dawn’s Ardeshir Cowasjee’s article, he writes ‘It is Zardari’s wife’s assassination, and only and simply that, which has shot Zardari into the position where he now finds himself — unelected, having no constitutional nexus, but almost the sole spokesperson in this flailing Republic, sought out by locals and foreigners for his words of wisdom and policy. If miracles do happen, then Zardari can certainly claim one in his case.‘ #
- The Lawyers’ Crusade - The New York Times

A very extensive article on the lawyers movement in Pakistan it writes ‘Ahsan is almost recklessly outspoken about P.P.P. leaders, even though they are his own political patrons. He speaks admiringly of Benazir Bhutto’s courage and steadfastness but also points out with disdain that she viewed herself as the P.P.P.’s “life chairperson.” And he does not bother to conceal his dim view of Zardari. In the car, as we drove back through the night to Lahore, I asked him how many of the allegations of corruption he believed were justified. “Most of them,” Ahsan said, after a moment’s reflection. “The type of expenses that she had and he has are not from sources of income that can be lawfully explained and accounted for.” #
