The Aftermath of the MA Jinnah Road Bomb Blast

Following the bomb blast in Karachi – life generally goes on, but the people, the shopkeepers, the families who have suffered shall never forget the day an unruly mob changed their lives forever. Here I happened to photograph this shopkeeper on MA Jinnah Road who sits helplessly watching as many fire tenders try their best to douse the flames that have left his shop in ruin, little can he do to undo the damage that has already been done. But life must go on…… Pakistani have learnt to be very resilient in the face of insurmountable difficulties, they pick up from the ruins and continue with daily life. Here this shopkeeper was naturally furious but was looking forward to getting back to his shop and rebuilding it from scratch. Life must go on…

Very nice recipe! :-). I enjoy studying your blog. Where did you download this grateful homepage design from? Salutations from london.

What Karachi people are expecting more than it things and situation can't get any worse as we had seen in last years.
MQM claims to be popular party of Karachi are only limited for getting seat and ministries in all level.When ever the matter of responsibility comes they all slip from the scene and start wailing unanimously on the acts of hidden hands in Karachi riots.
Karachi people should think that how much human and business loss they would bear more under the popularity flag of one and only MQM.

The subsequent and immediate effect after this tragic scene which was heavily guarded by state forces is loss of trust of people on their government.Not a single state function took stern and on timely precautionary measures that could have limited this huge loss.All openly contributed to escalate this tragedy to transform it into ethnic riots and in which they all failed.
Here people including shia participants and shopkeepers showed extra ordinary courage and strength to restrict this tragedy into a circumscribed tragedy and no credit goes to govt of Karachi in this regard.

Dr JAwwad
I am speachless after reading your suggession to carry weapons???
We cannot give in to arms and lawlessness so quickly .
I think the civilians of Karachi have won and controlled the situation.
that is why i paid the tribute.The Karachilites did not givein to emotion.It did not turn into a civil war which was the aim of this attcak.
Shaitte and Sunnis reacted in the controlled and concious manner and this is the only way to deafeat the big conspiracies planned against Pakistan.
Pakistanis at all cost try to save themselves ,the ultimate paln is to kill as many as possible,after all in the end all are Muslims.
I think each and every section of the Karachi society did respond in a very responsible manner and it saved our city and lives.
That is all we need.
If the enemy bombs us we do not stand up and start bombing ourself.

I agree with Ms Farrah and Pray to Allah that He may guide and give "wisdom" to our Fools we have for politicians, I also pray to Allah that May He save us from the Return of below mentioned "Bloody 90s". [Amen]

@Jawwad

"My question is why not the common man?"

A common man who can afford a gun in Pakistan will most probably have one. Those who do not posses a gun are mostly those who cannot afford it.

I don't know why you think that gun free society can work. Look at EU. You experience relative few gun related incidents. Most of the incidents involve gang members fighting each other in drugs related business and very few gun related to issues in the rest of the normally running society. I think you are thinking too much about US-like societies. I have numerous examples of mentally unstable people murdering innocent people in Universities, shopping malls etc.

I understand your concern, but guns carried by all people is NOT the solution. The number of killings will only increase in any society and even more in a society like the Pakistani with immense gap between poor and rich. The solution is to disarm ALL civilians. Let's start in the cities and the rural areas and slowly move towards NWFP/tribal areas. The tribal areas will be tricky since they have different culture. We need to develop those areas first both infrastructure and education is a must. Then we can gradually disarm those civilians too.

Leaders of Shia rioters demanding the release of *inncoent* rampagers..

===================
Dear Jawwad Sahab,

Lebanon was far more modern and ultra mod in 50s and very much CIVIL and not at all tribal would you like to define the tribal behavior of Urban Guerrillas of Lebanon - Phalangists, Duruz Militia and all such ruthless and brutal brutes were Civil, Urban and educated as well. Lebanese Civil War Period 1975 - 1990.

This is all bullshit. The elders of the community who advise to the youngster to behave are shunned and their families harassed.

Now the *cool* eldes go along the boys.

I bet the Imamia student Organization-boys got a big pat on their backs for their rampage and then those same Shia *ulemas* would condemn the rampage-act in public.

Just like Altaf Hussain and his gang, they kill in the night and join the janaza of the victim in the morning...

Dear Sir,

It has to be start from somewhere becasue Military Operation couldn't finish MQM rather those who were in charge of Military Operation against MQM have themselves said that Operation against MQM was wrong, you tried legal battle with them and Naseerullah Babar during his rule tried that and now in 2009 he is also saying that it was futile.

We should not use sweeping statements against any community/political party [that include Shias/Deobandis/JI/MQM and Urdu Speaking] if we want to solve this lawlessness and anarchy.

Arming Citizens will pave the way for disaster [I wonder if any of you have even read about the Civil Wars in Beirut, Rwanda, Sudan, Yugoslavia and other such countries] because first you arm them then you concentrate and inhabit any particular community in certain area and this the core of the problem of Lawlessness Ethnic hatred/Sectarian Hatred. Therefore Pluralism and Mix Localities is the solution when you have mix population then interests [i.e. Peace and Law and Order become common Interest].

Nobody can sack any community from Karachi on Gun Point [because member of every community plays part in the development and prosperity of this city], and let me tell you very clearly that when you people at the drop of hat start raising finger on Blackwater and CIA then these very forces are more than able to ignite a Civil War and you will never know what hit you. They will army each community living in the city and make use fight by igniting a Riot or Clash by assassinating anyone from any political party. Let me make it more clearly, they closely watch and read press statements given by Political Leaders against each other and they act upon and after these statements [they have did it in Latin America]

Type Operation Phoenix, Operation PB Suceess, Operation Ajax in US National Security Archive http://www.gwu.edu/~nsarchiv/ [Declassified US Govt. Papers] and read it yourself

How they Ignite Civil Wars in Lebanon and Latin American Countries - [Read two books The Israeli Secret Service by Richard Deacon and By Way of Deception: A Devastating Insider's Portrait of the Mossad by Claire Hoy and Victor Ostrovsky [Mossad Official and sacked from Isreal and Mossad as well and lives in Canada] and INSIDE THE COMPANY: CIA DIARY by Philip Agee [Former CIA Official- Now dead and his passport and US Nationality was snatched by the USA]

@Jawaad

I beg to differ. You couldn't be more wrong. When each and every citizens starts to carry a gun, then also account for mistaken shootings/killings. I know the cities are different from tribal areas, but still you have large portions of different ethnic/religious groups. When a genuine or deliberate mistake happens, then I suppose you also can see that hell will break out.....It's a bad idea. It's better to ensure rule of law and disarm ALL civilians as well as we can!

@observer!
yes i am more than agree with the concerns you raised.
But keep in mind that arm free society is just a dream.for me arms free society in current world is not possible. not even in saudi arabia which have most strict rules in the world. this is a "demand and supply" business. where is the demand there is a supply.

my humble question is that in our cities who have the guns?
atleast every one who have an evil intention.
every ethino religious extremist have the gun.
every nationalist political organization have the guns.(MQM,JSTPP,ANP,PPI etc etc)
every dacoit, mobile snatcher, car lifter, land mafia people, bhatta people, drug trafficers, satta organizers, every criminal have atleast one automatic assault rifle.

My question is why not the common man?
Aslo there is a big difference between hanging fire arm on your shoulder all the time and keeping it in your house and shop for the protection.
however one can not ignore the possible (Godforbid)communal or ethenic tension. Again my question is... suppose you have a gun in your house and your neighborhood is affected by ethenic tension, target killing, destruction of property and all nonsense crimes occur during these kinds of situation...my question is what will you do?
would you stay in your house and defend your family or leave the house and start shooting discriminately???
i bet you would stay in your house and defend your family...why?? because "GUNS DON'T KILL PEOPLE....PEOPLE KILL PEOPLE"
i had a very close soomro friend in LMC.the guy had one of the finest collection of weapon i have ever seen. from knives to crossbow to assault rifles but i was not scarred of his collection for a single moment while some other udru speaking(MQM workers) in his area do affraid of him.because i knew that he is a common man like me and he will not harm any one without a genuine reason.

Question is why a common man should not posses the weapon? in his house or shop?

@Faraz

We cannot fully avoid the use of firearms, but we can reduce it significantly if there is will power behind implementing the laws.

Its a jungle out there. The problem is that the shopkeepers are themselves not armed to the teeth- which they should be since we live in a jungle. Screw the rangers or police - they are only there to protect the strong. The weak must fend for themselves. I say if every shopkeer carrying a shotgun came out and opened fire on these guys there would be no riots to begin with. No mob will have the heart to stand up to 250 shopkeepers with shotguns.

if we dont have the heart to carry a gun and shoot our own enemies then we are simply cowards who need bodyguards. In a civilized country you have the police to do this - but we are FAR from it :) The US did in in the early 1800's and so must we.

I think its quite obvious that without guns you have no say in this country.

"I think its quite obvious that without guns you have no say in this country."

Yo are right that as it is now, everybody needs guns to protect themselves, BUT is it not better to disarm ALL civilians - otherwise we will end up in another hell where maniacs run havoc every now and then.

There is off course the question about who will disarm PPP, MQM, PML-N, ANP and JI members? Nobody will except Pakistanis change the government. PML-N is NO solution either, so the scenario is far too doomy for Pakistan since no political party seems to be capable of fulfilling the vacuum.

The real question is mayve; will Pakistan survive or be split in to:

PPP controlling Sindh
PML-N controlling Punjab
MQM controlling KHI
Balochistan and NWFP will also be uled by local parties if the ugly scenario becomes a reality.

Unfortunately I have a bad feeling :-(

Why dont give some measures instead of giving Bad feeling. Imran Khan can control NWFP and Baluchistan.

Karachi is the Capital of Sindh and MQM has strong presence in Interior of Sindh. By the way ANP also won assembly seats from Karachi.

Unfortunately disarming all civilians or wiping out guns altogether has never worked (worldwide) - and never will. Physical violence is human nature. Would you take away their fists as well? If you outlaw guns (or swords) this ONLY means that only criminal and outlaws would carry guns.

Case and point: Do you think imposing Section 144 in the city has ANY EFFECT on armed robberies, gun point snatching and random 'firing' incidents - obviously not. Imposing 144 only makes sure the criminals have a easy disarmed civilian to threaten with their guns (i dont think they care much about the law now do they!)

I dont mean to make any tall claims about the future of our country - Those are things which I have NO idea about. What i do know is random violence and planned 'mob' attacks (which I doubt they were) can be completely stopped if you stop relying on the government and pick up arms yourself. If every or most civilians start carrying weapons (like they used to in the old days) I believe order will automatically be restored.

Dear Faraz Sahab,

Instead of Gun and Section 144. My humble suggestion would be Neighborhood Committees comprising upon elders and interaction of communities with each other on regular basis. Guns and Ammunition couldn't help a bit and that I know from my own experience in Govt. Service. In upper Sind [Areas around Jacobabad, Sukkur, Ghtoki, Kashmore, and Shikarpur] whole tribes own and carry Guns not only Guns [Guns KK, G3 and M16] but Rocket Launchers and RPG as well but what is the result, more bloodshed. There used to be a Dahani Tribe in Larkana and since last 30 years there was so much bad blood between Dahanis and Jatois that now Dahanis are no where to be seen. I have people die particularly those who not only carry Guns but Bodyguard as well, and they are killed very ruthlessly [One Chief in Baluchistan Sardar Raeesani was killed [65 bullet holes] and he died with Bodyguard. Akbar Bugti's son Salal Bugti was killed in Quetta when he was with bodyguards [and Bugtis and other Tribes don't carry Airgun but real Mac coy mean Machine Guns] so forget guns.

Instead of Guns - Try Mohalla Committees.

My humble suggestion would be Neighborhood Committees comprising upon elders and interaction of communities with each other on regular basis
___________________________________________________________

interaction between communities for what?
faraz khan was not talking about communal war and tension.he was talking about big scale armed robberies ranging from mobile snatching, car snatching till armed robbery in the house,money exchange and mostly in houses in day light. and i can tell you with my own personal experience that even police and ranger can't stop it,even standing few yards away from the crime scene.i have seen a mobile snatching just 10 meters away from a police mobile and no one knew that the whole crime scene was not looking a crime scene at all.it was looking like a friendly chat.
i remember a robbery in my neighbor the house was 20 meter away from my house. and i was on the street when the robbery took place and when i learnt i was shocked because again that scene was not looking like a crime scene...why ?? because robbery has become the most easy and rewarding job in karachi. what you have to do is just to show your gun and demand what you need..

Secondly and most importantly there is a big difference between a tribal society and a civic society where the problems, conflicts,issues and even social values differ.
i am quite sure this scale of armed robbery is unimaginable in jacobabad, wazeeristan or dera bugti.

i believe that time has come for citizens of karachi, lahore and peshawar or any bigger city of pakistan to keep the weapon(not less than automatic assault rifles)...why ??
because like many govt departments police also has been failed in performing its duty.....why? honestly the law enforcement agencies has lost completely their interest in performing their duties. what they do is just to become visible ...thats all.
i believe the suggestion of faraz khan is not new and sensible.

Amir Mughal is a true PPLa.

Right or wrong doesn't matter to him. He would support any thing PPP does and if he can not find a worthy argument in support of the CORRUPT PPP leadership, he would start to post irrelevant remarks about the people criticizing the corrupts.

He lives in fools paradise, where every one else is faulty except the people Amir Mughal worships.

As another poster said, he is a jacka$$, no matter how many books you load upon him, he wouldn't benefit. His upper-chamber will still hold spider-webs.

Unfortunately Aamir mostly fail to address the issues. Instead he avoids direct answers. He thinks he is smart and cannot be exposed. That is certainly not the case. Those who want to know the truth have looked through Aamir with the blink of an eye.

Happy New Year for what? New Year has already started for Muslim on 1st Muharram. Dont you follow Imran Khan?? As you rightly said that life must go on! Rather shedding tears on the ruins we can try to build a better and more tolerant Pakistan where all sects have the liberty to practice their religious beliefs and rituals

is it my misperception or this really is makes sense?
till couple of days ago every one was blaming taliban for suicide bombing in karachi but todays newspaper is showing some different aspect of Karachi bombing.
let me show you.

1)inspector general sindh said that initial investigations doesn't conclude that it is a suicide bombing.

2)interior minister rejected the video clips which were produced by MQM. saying that these CCTV's were installed and controlled by MQM and we can not trust on these video clips.

3) Taliban commonder claiming for suicide bombing while there is lack of evidence,supporting this claim.

4) Why commonoes and snipers did not stop the mob?

5) Million dollar question....who stopped the fire brigades to enter in these area.

if MQM supporter don't call me "SOB" then let me tell you one thing,this was not just bombing....this is an execution of well calculated, organized and cold blooded plan of destruction....
now the question is who have the resources to commiting these horrible crimes? ....TALIBAN??? i don't think so.

Dr Jawwad's opinion does have weight.

My views on such videos [flogging and head chopping videos are included] and such journalists who give too much coverage to the so-called Islamic Militants is as under:

Our several TV Anchors for instance Kamran Khan of GEO TV who ‘SUCCESSFULLY’ interview

[Al-Qaeda commander claims responsibility for 9/11 attacks Wednesday, July 23, 2008 Accuses Pakistan of inflicting more damage on his organisation; Mustafa says al-Qaeda men also attacked Danish embassy in Islamabad These comments were made in an interview with Najeeb Ahmed that was broadcast on Monday on Geo TV's Aaj Kamran Khan Kay Saath programme. This was the first detailed interview in five years of a senior al-Qaeda leader].

some obscure and concocted Militant Abu Mustafa Al Yazid [What is Al-Qaida ? Aaj Kamran Khan K saath P-1] and relayed it on GEO TV for creating more problem for Pakistan. How the hell they get such interviews when even the high tech Western Agencies could’t trace them???

Months after right after 911 Hamid Mir filed a front page Super Headline In Daily Dawn that Osama Bin Laden has 36 Nukes [Hamid Mir wasn’t even Dawn Employee not even on contract in Dawn.

What was the purpose of such stories which always embarrass Pakistan. There are several Militants of Northern Areas who used to address crowded Press Conference and getting coverage in every Private TV Channels in Pakistan. Basically this Rat Race amongst TV Channels has ruined the mental peace of Pakistanis. Nobody is saying to ban TV Channels but did anyone ever questioned the news they present, its veracity, its source, and its background. These TV Channels are keeping alive this “Alleged War On Terror” to make money out of the miseries of People of NWFP, Baluchistan and FATA. Let me quote you a dialogue from a best seller by Late. Harold Robbins

‘The truth,’ I said. ‘Can’t any of you tell the truth? Do you always have to manipulate others doing your dirty work for you when the truth is so much simpler?’

‘That’s show business,’ Guy said glibly.

‘I don’t like it,’ I said.

‘You better get used to it if you’re going to stay in it.’ (from The Lonely Lady, 1976)

@Jawwad

Thanks for your thought provoking post. You are absolutely spot on with many of your points. Though Aamir has said "something", but still don't expect a PPP jiyala to come out wholeheartedly from the closet. At the moment MQM and PPP is hand in glove.

There are too many unsolved equations/incidents. We MUST demand INDEPENDENT investigation. It is NOT hard to figure out who is on the CCTV. At least the faces can be seen. I know they are not the masterminds, but at least we might get a clue from them.

Urgent action from the government (PPP and MQM) is needed. It is NOT enough to come on TV and make spin!

And yes...people on tend to get abusive when they don't have arguments.

. Blackwater. Who else? Mr. usmani said that after he conducted a sophisticated investigation into this matter. Hence concluded!

BLACKWATER:

Yeah right. They cannot even lit a matchstick.

UK had massive race and football riots.
How they were controlled,anyone recorded on the CCTV footage was published in the paper ,on the TV the images were shown until the people were caught (with the help of family ,friends ,society )and were presented before magistrates and punishment was awarded.
----
these people served punishments and came back to society ,it gives a message to the rest that damaging public property is a crime and punishment is the major detterent.
----
I suggest these people should not be branded as belonging to a party ,any faith group but in honesty and fairness should be tried for what they did because in the end ,every individual has a choice and a personal responsibility.
Accountability for our own actions.
