You know guys, each and every comment above this, is so so correct - is this not good news? Does this not show the maturity of this nation and does it not reflect the true mind set of a decent nation which has never had a chance - a fact that has been acknowledged by a foreigner as well (ondellette)- is it not respect for the Pakistanis who had otherwise been branded as illitrate and as terrorists...

The most important thing perhaps, which I have learnt in exile, is to seperate the governments from the common man... may it be USA or Pakistan.

I have hope - perhaps also because otherwise the consequences are too painfull to write about... All I know is that the next sixty years are not going to be like the previous sixty - whether they turn for good or for worse...is what we must work at..

They say that IT is a great social leveller and they also say that pen is mightier than the sword... thanks to brave men like Awab, our voice cannot be subdued and it can reach all over... now, this may prove to be mightier than any individual even if supported by a state machinery...

And this is where the hope lies - our work, to be honest is not finished - these jokers will make mistakes - our work has only entered a new phase - and hopefully everyone will keep working - we have taken the right step - we are better off than before...

I m really set back by ANP. I always thought they are belong to a principle party but they are backing from both of their agenda i.e Restoration of Judiciar and .. not backing the dictator [Musharaf] but ... may be Expectations are the cause of hurt... and we should not keep expectations from political leaders

I m not a supporter of Nawaz Sharif.. but he has been so strong on his stand that i start to belief either he is totally changed or he has learned to disguised perfectly ... If he stands firm on the principles in next election he will surely clean sweep. but once... for once PPP should now come out of the fear game and boldly take stance against Musharaf decisions or else they are wiped out in next election.

The only card now left with Musharaf is to buy time for the first cabinet session so the foreign ambassadors make PML Q and PPP alloy..

Great article Amer.. 2 things seems to be happening now
either you will be joining us in Pakistan or we pakistanis be joining u abroad :D...
Political leaders have last chance to save inflation.. hoping judiciary is restored and dreaming Musharaf leaves us soon....

Sorry to say but nothing is going to change. The deals have been already made. Mushy will be around, at least for now. Zardari has been bought by having Baluchistan(Mugsi appointment as governor) handed to him along with the appeals against NRO getting dismissed. Nawaz is content with Punjab for now (and promise of repeal of law against third0time premiership) and all he is hoping for is as much strength there as possible. There will be NO RESTORATION of justices unless they sell out too and that is what US and UK are openly working at. It's all there if you carefully listen to PPP/PML(N)/ANP leadership...

Bravo! Well said! No one should forget the countless who lost their lives in numerous suicide bombings in Rawalpindi/Lahore/Charsada etc, the 12th May 2007 slaughter by MQM, the terrorist attack on BB's procession on 18th October 2007, the bombing of PPP's Liaqat Bagh gathering and the consequenst assasination of BB on 27th December 2007.

And I do agree that the Americans are not bad people. No where in the world are "people" bad per se and to classify any nation as such (like Bush's classification of Afghanistan and Iraq as "EVIL") is a crime in itself. But the picture of innocence you paint of the American government is a bit naive. All through the history of the world, civilizations have endured one powerful nation which dictated terms to the rest of the world, be it the Romans, the Greeks or even Muslims at their peak. Only the methods have changed, today it is political and economical manipulation and the goals are global superiority and control of the world's natural resources.

I hope these elections bring about some positive change in our country's situation...too long have we waited for change with never faltering hope and followed every leader's (false) claims to bring about prosperity...maybe, just maybe this time around the events of the last 8 years have shaken us out of apathy...may Allah save our nation...

I agree, hatred for musharraf was a big factor in PML (N) victory, but i do feel more than that, was Shareef's
principle stand on various issues. I, alongwith many other educated pakistanis voted for the first time, having two things in mind, one, enough is enough, mushy and america should no more control our destiny, two, in case of denial of our will, we would have justification to line up on the side of the lawyers and the civil society for a democratic and brighter Pakistan. Many of us, did not know even the members filed by PML (N), yet we kept on stamping Tiger, for they stood with the truth.
Let me clarify, personalities like Shareef and Zardari have been dwarfed by genuine and truthful thinking..in fact slogan of 'roti, kapra and makaan' made ZAB shine on the political arena rather than his handsome face.
It is the thinking which is honored, carried forward, rather than the personalities, and Feb 18 poll was classic example, as many Pakistanis know very well the clumsiness of Zardari and Shareef as persons, but,who so ever will speak the truth, public would adore, atleast the Pakistanis.

Thank you for saying that the Americans are not bad people. If truth be known, many Americans wish to see Bush and Cheney impeached as well. Yes, most Americans will understand if Musharraf is impeached. Most of us don't understand what our own government is doing. Many of us have found the struggle of the Pakistanis, especially the lawyers and judiciary, and the efforts to get the word out during the emergency, an inspiring lesson in democracy. May you succeed in all your efforts.

They have already given a glimpse of what we can expect.Over a glittering dinner in Islamabad the two who got the mandate of the people, barred coverage for their get togather;in their speeches spoke not a word about restoration of CH Iftikhar and the judiciary;and to top it all these leaders and recipents of the people's mandate gave their speeches in English.Does the majority of their electore understand this language-or have they already started to become 'their master's voice'.As the Chaudhrys from Gujrat have forwarned,"let us wait and see.
