Annual Award for Distinction in International Law and Affairs presented to the Lawyers and Judges of Pakistan, as represented by Aitzaz Ahsan, in absentia
Embattled judges and vulnerable children are among the issues to be taken up this week as more than 5,000 lawyers gather at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square for the annual meeting of the New York State Bar Association.
The International Law and Practice Section tomorrow (Wed. Jan. 29th 2008) gives its annual award for distinction in international law and affairs in absentia to Aitzaz Ahsan, on behalf of the lawyers and judges of Pakistan. Much of that countrys legal and judicial community has been in conflict with Pakistans leadership since President Pervez Musharraf suspended the constitution and replaced seven of the 11 members of the Supreme Court.
Mr. Ahsan, president of the Pakistan Supreme Court Bar Association, has been under frequent arrest for his efforts to restore Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry as chief justice.
Earlier this month, the New York City Bar Association granted honorary membership to Justice Chaudhry. In November, the city and state bars, as well as the New York County Lawyers Association, organized a rally attended by about 700 people at Manhattan Supreme Court in support of Pakistans lawyers and judges.

In some private gathering Musharaf has expressed his views that he “wont leave” Itazaz, Kurd and other leaders of legal community and will “teach them a lesson”.
I dont think its a lost cause, its beganing of an end, its start towards indipendence and an honourbale life.
I personally know majority of these judges and had worked with most of them who did not took oath under dictators PCO, the ones I hated most during my career and were incompetent, corrupt and dishonest (one develops disrespect while working with such people) were choosen to take oath by dictator General, I acn swear on their (ones who refuse to take oath under generals law) honesty and integrity, infact, the day I got the news that these judges were removed, I was unable to stop my tears.
They might loose their jobs, but if we look in to their past, most of them dont have their own houses, no savings as salery is quite little, if they were corrupt like present lot they would have plots in “chack Shahzad, properties in Gawader and permist several houses rented to foreigners in Islamabad, but they theirself choose this path and its not easy, they are sacrificing their power, their previlleges and all with full knowledge, being judges of superior courts they are not idiots to waste it but they sacrificed it knowingly, the time is not far when these judges wold be heros of our nation.
They have set a trend and today every Pakistani is taking to be a free human, free of slavery and free of military rule on gun point, a cause which have became a cause of 160 million Pakistani’s can not be said to be a lost cause.
It’s first step towards freedom from Pakistani Hitlers with guns.
