Linux here I come….
For a computer geek like me who has remained mesmerized in the world of computers from the hey days of an Apple IIe moving into the 8086’s and slowly creeping up to the 486 era and now living the Pentium age. I have migrated from Windows into Linux.
The reasons why I switched from Windows to Linux were plain and simple, I like to be different but at the same time I just feel that its too heavy on the hardware and has an uncanny habit to be a magnet for viruses and bugs. I personally have seen Windows evolve from the MS-DOS literally watched the Win 3.11, Win 95, Win 98 and the present XP era, during this long process I can claim to have almost mastered the OS literally like reading the lines on the back of my hand. Linux had always tickled my senses as it has been a revolutionary Open Source creation by Linus Torvalds, back in 1993 I tried the Red Hat flavor of Linux but failed miserably as my modem amongst other stuff was not fully supported to its liking, now after a long spam of 13 years I have summed up the courage to yet again embark on this famed Operating System.
Ubuntu is the Linux OS which I choose to install, remarkably its very easy and resembles Windows and to be honest the switch was not all that horrendous as many may perceive and I can attest to the fact that it took me 20 minutes flat from start to finish of the installation process. During the move I retained my original Windows partition if i ever need to scurry back for any nostalgia while the rest of the free space has been dedicated to the new system on dual-boot. If any one of you care to give it a whirl even if only for a simple one-off test order a free CD from Ship-it, they actually send the CD to Pakistan free of cost within about 2 weeks. This is a Live CD meaning that you can boot into this OS on start-up and it remains in the RAM only, play around and when you shut down you can reboot back to your preferred system without missing a beat. Try it, Be different and be free

Dr. Sahib. Try VMware. This is the best company of world believe me ;-). You could have several OSes all together at same time. I have Vista/XP/RHL/Ubuntu on my machine and I use all toegther at same time. Try Workstation and download free trial version for one month and when it expires just let me know.I will hook you ;-)
VMWare is indeed cool though I only use it for Linux(Fedora/Debian) but it really clogs up my system (512 MB RAM) so I decided to install linux on an old box unfortunately this old box ( with Cyrix-M processor) is pretty old for linux to be installed on it does anyone have any experience installing linux on a cyrix machine?
PPH thanx for the recommendation - I think ill take VISTA for a twirl on that. Technically we need VMware Player for all this is that correct? or is it the VMTN Virtual Appliances
I don’t use Player(sorry that is free). Not worth it ;-) . Actually in player you could run pre configured VMs but in Work Station you could create VMs too besides you have 64 bit OS support. Actually VM server is free too and you could create new VMs in that too. I tried Beta 2 Vista with VMware WS 6.0 and it was hanging during installation. People thought that MS was playing dirty tricks with VMware but with RC 1 of Vista this problem seems to have gone. Wait for GA build of Vista. It is not stable. I would say go for OS X if you are really waiting for Vista. As Steve said that MS is really dumb, they even could not copy fast :-)
shobz, exactly what are you using that you feel ubuntu will not support? just trying to figure out why people won’t switch and what they are having to go through to do so.
awab, nice going dude. about time you made the switch. glad you’re enjoying it. i wish you had documented your entire install and headache process so people could have learnt from you.
Dr. Sahib, can to update us all on your continuing experience with Ubuntu? How is it performing? Have you installed any other applications from their software library? Is uninstalling them also equally easy? Do tell…

Or alternatively you can callmy good friend and Linux advocate - Asaf Maruf at PING Systems (www.ping.com.pk) and perhaps be able to get any/all flavors of Linux out there.
Asaf can be reached at asaf@ping.com.pk
